DuraDiamond bits are diamond-impregnated designs for the hardest and most abrasive formations or those formations, such as chert, that cannot be sheared by PDC cutters. This range of bits will drill faster and farther than even the most heavy set fixed cutter bits in these formations when used with downhole turbines or high speed positive displacement motors. PDC are capable of high penetration rates, but in the hardest most abrasive formations, or in thick layers of chert or dolomite they do not last enough to be economical.

Roller cone bits in these applications often experience short runs, suffer from low penetration rates, and frequently come out under gauge. Other natural diamond bits provide an alternative but are generally less durable or fast and are seldom optimized for the formation to be drilled.
