Upreaming cutters are positioned on the back angle of the bit, at the top of the gauge pad. They allow the bit to back ream efficiently, limiting gauge wear.

Upreaming cutters are an option on both steel and matrix bits for those applications where it may be necessary to ream out of the well bore. In some cases, these cutters are positioned down the back angle of the bit to allow ledges to be removed.
