The SteeringWheel product line was developed for PDC-proven applications that had been
abandoned in favor of roller-cone bits, simply because of a lack of directional control. This
product line has been expanded significantly to address a number of demanding stability and directional
drilling problems. The part ring design increases junkslot area while still retaining extensive
circumferential gauge coverage. This gauge configuration is applicable to even the softest formations
with waterbased mud, alleviating balling problems.
The benefits of the SteeringWheel or Ring Gauge include the following:
- Enhanced stability for smoother torque response
- Resistance to bit whirl
- Excellent borehole quality
- Increased bit stability
These benefits result in a PDC bit design that delivers the traditional benefits of a PDC bit with
the directional performance of a roller-cone bit.
One SteeringWheel bit design cannot be universally applied in all directional situations. The
wide variety of well profiles, combined with different mud types, rock types and rig
components, points to the need for many different design variations.
ReedHycalog® has developed a complete product line of SteeringWheel bits addressing a
number of needs, including lighter-set bits, gauge design variations, and cutter size and
type variations.
