Hybrid PDC Bits

 Fixed Cutter
 Features

ReedHycalog® Hybrid PDC bits utilize a secondary element of diamond impregnated tungsten carbide set behind and separate from the PDC cutter. These secondary elements are generally referred to as "Hybrids". Each hybrid is circumferentially paired with a specific PDC cutter located in a critical, potentially high wear region of the bit.

Improved performance of Hybrid bits can be attributed to:

  1. Enhanced Bit Stability
  2. Improved Torque Control
  3. Protection of PDC Cutters from Impact Damage
  4. Protection of PDC Cutters from Abrasive Wear
  5. Enhanced Gauge Protection
  6. Fewer PDC Cutters to Drill a Given Formation

For harder formations or applications that contain particularly hard, abrasive stringers ReedHycalog utilizes hybrids on the bit face from the lower shoulder all the way out to the gauge area to limit lateral vibration and absorb any shock loadings through formation changes. Hybrids are not necessary in the cone area because PDC cutters in the cone are far less susceptible to impact damage. Also, space is at a premium in this region of the bit.

When Hybrids PDC bits were introduced, the phenomenon of bit whirl was not well understood and the detrimental effects of whirl on PDC bits were not yet documented. By using precisely placed hybrids to protect PDC cutters and increase bit life, rather than just overloading the bit face with additional PDC cutters, the bit designer has the latitude to develop a bit that is more open and aggressive, and hence, faster. Additionally, lateral stability is enhanced.
