The SteeringWheel gauge provides lateral stability without loss of steerability and is considered suitable for applications that encounter formations which are particularly susceptible to inducing lateral vibrations, or where borehole quality is of paramount importance or where the hole angle is very high and gravitational forces are at their highest.

In order to maintain sufficient steerability a partial SteeringWheel™ geometry is used. This provides a break in the ring continuity so that Active Gauge (AG) cutting elements can be placed along the edge of the open ring section. In addition, Dual Action Gauge (DAG) cutters are positioned on the back angle of the ring to improve sidecutting when the bit is tilted by the bias unit.
