Active Gauge
Active Gauge arrangement is one of the three gauge options available on ReedHycalog®’s extensive range of RS drill bits.
Design Solution
The Active Gauge cutters combine with the aggressive PDC backrake of the face cutters to achieve high potential side cutting ability.
This provides a distinct advantage when drilling tight radius wellbores. The level of PDC gauge protection also allows increased
bit life through long tangent sections and in extended reach wells.
In order to produce the Active Gauge cutting structure, four main design modifications have been made, as compared to a
conventional gauge arrangement:
- Reduce the diameter of the main bit body at gauge.
- Full round PDC cutters placed at gauge with aggressive backrake.
- Maximise cutter placement along entire length of gauge.
- Use of Tungsten Carbide impregs to track gauge cutters.
These provide control over the depth of cut at gauge.
